Here at Wigan and Leigh Pensioners Link, we work with the over 50s to help support the over 50s.  We can help with any of life's challenges, such as finance, friendships, disabilities, feelings, welbeing, learning, social activities and so on. We also help people to live a happy, sociable lives and reach their full potential.

We provide a drop-in hub (on Charles Street in Leigh) with as much emphasis on community and peer support as it has on professional expertise. Our Hub has all the necessary information and advice for people to remain independent, with extra support if your circumstances change as a result of illness, bereavement or any other aspect of ageing.

A lot of our work takes place in the community too - our brilliant team of staff and volunteers travel across the whole Wigan and Leigh borough everyday to offer our services and support.

Please contact us on any matter relating to older people and carers. We have a small staff team and a dedicated team of volunteers who are here to help you.

Our Aims:

Reduce Isolation

Maintain Independence and Wellbeing

Stimulate social interaction

Access information and services in the community

You are welcome to contact us or visit us at any time through the week. You are also welcome to visit us on behalf of a friend, relative or neighbour who you feel could benefit from some extra help and support.

At Pensioners Link, we are extremely lucky and appreciative of our team of brilliant volunteers.  We have over 50 volunteers working across the borough, helping us deliver our activities and services. Without our volunteer support, Pensioners Link would not exist.

All of our volunteers receive full training and support. We have regular meetings with guest speakers and there are often social events that take place.  Volunteering can be extremely rewarding and enjoyable - and a great way to use your skills and experience.

To become a volunteer, we would need you to complete an application and attend a very informal meeting with one of our coordinators.  We then request two references (either professional or personal) and we will also complete a DBS (this is a police check that's needed as you could be working with vulnerable adults).

We require no regular commitment, you can volunteer as little or as often as you like.  Most volunteers with Pensioners Link offer two hours a week and help us with activities such as; telephone calls, reception, helping prepare resources, supporting our staff, and travelling across with borough helping to deliver our community services.

If you are interested in volunteering, we would love to hear from you.

Pensioners Link was established in 1988 and was the vision of two pensioners, Allan Taylor and Peter Kenny. They believed that, provided older people were given the necessary information and advice, with support at difficult times, they would be able to remain independent. An important element of their vision was to see organisations and people linked together so as to provide maximum benefit for individual older people.

We are a registered charity, based at Allan Taylor House, 27 Charles Street, Leigh, working with and for the benefit of the over 50’s throughout the borough of Wigan. We currently provide a range of services which support older people by providing information, advice and signposting on a wide range of issues. We also offer a one-to-one counselling service provided by fully qualified counsellors. Very importantly, Pensioners Link provides a wide range of social activities, which are very well attended by older people.

People who come along to the centre thoroughly enjoy themselves and, for many, it is a lifeline to meet up socially with friends they have made over the weeks and months (and for many over the years).

Pensioners Link has various outreach projects which are continually changing and developing to cover the needs and wishes of the over 50’s throughout the Wigan Borough.
